TESE (testicular sperm extraction) and TESA (testicular sperm aspiration) are procedures that collect sperm directly from the testicle. They are used when there is no sperm in the ejaculate, for example because of a blockage. The sperm found is used with IVF and ICSI, where a single sperm is injected into each egg.

What is TESE and TESA?
TESA uses a fine needle to draw sperm from the testicle; TESE takes a small tissue sample through a small cut. Both are done under sedation at the clinic, and the sample is examined in the laboratory the same day. Any sperm found can be used straight away or frozen for later.
