Gender Selection in Baku or Cyprus

Choosing the sex of your embryo with PGD, as part of IVF or donation treatment

Gender selection is the choice of the sex of the embryo transferred in an IVF cycle. On day 3, a few cells are taken from each embryo and tested with PGD. The chromosomal sex of each embryo (XX or XY) is read from its chromosomes, which makes the result highly accurate, although no test is perfect. Results are ready by day 5, and a healthy embryo of the chosen sex is transferred fresh that day.

What is gender selection?

Gender selection is not a separate journey. It is IVF, or egg or sperm donation, with PGD added: the embryos are screened in the laboratory for their chromosomal sex and for chromosomal conditions at the same time. The chosen embryo is transferred, and suitable embryos of the other sex can be frozen. For genetic screening, cells are taken on day 5 and results take about 15 days, so the embryos are frozen and transferred on a later visit. For gender selection, cells are taken on day 3 and results are ready by day 5, in time for a fresh transfer.

Who can benefit from gender selection?

  • Couples who want to choose the sex of their next child, for family balancing
  • Families who carry a condition linked to the X or Y chromosome
  • Couples having IVF or donation treatment who also want chromosome screening of every embryo

Partner clinic in London: MotherScan

Accuracy and the chance of a pregnancy: two different things

The sex result
PGD reads the chromosomes of each embryo, so the sex of the embryos you have is known with high accuracy before transfer.
The number of embryos
The test cannot change the sex of an embryo, only identify it. How many healthy embryos of the chosen sex you have depends on age, egg numbers and embryo quality.
If none is the sex you hoped for
You decide: transfer a healthy embryo of the other sex, freeze the healthy embryos and plan another cycle, or pause. Nothing is transferred without your consent.

Gender Selection: questions people ask

How much does gender selection cost?

Gender selection is sold as an IVF or donation package with NGS: IVF with NGS £7,000, egg donation with NGS £7,500, sperm donation with NGS £7,000. Each includes medication used in treatment, accommodation at CityLife Boutique Hotel in Baku (not included in Cyprus) and transfers between the airport, the hotel and the clinic. Gender selection is included in the NGS package price, with no extra fee.

How accurate is gender selection with PGD?

PGD reads the chromosomes of each embryo, so the sex result is highly accurate and far more reliable than sperm sorting, although no laboratory test is perfect. The practical limit is different: PGD tells you the sex of the embryos you have and cannot change it.

Can gender selection be combined with donor eggs?

Yes. PGD is carried out on embryos, so it works the same whether the eggs are your own or from a donor. Donor eggs usually produce more embryos to test, which raises the chance of having a healthy embryo of the chosen sex.

How long do we need to be in Baku or Cyprus for gender selection?

The same as the underlying journey, IVF or donation. Cells are taken from the embryos on day 3 and results are ready by day 5, so an embryo of the chosen sex can be transferred fresh on day 5 and no extra visit is needed.

What happens to the embryos we do not use?

Healthy embryos of either sex can be frozen for a later transfer. Embryos found to be chromosomally abnormal are not suitable for transfer. You decide what happens to every embryo, and nothing happens without your written consent. Embryos are frozen only with the written consent of both partners and can be stored for up to 5 years. After the first year, storage continues each year at your written request. Your UK team confirms the storage fee before anything is booked.
