What is egg donation?

In egg donation, a screened donor goes through the stimulation and egg collection, so you do not need to. Her eggs are fertilised with your partner's sperm on the day of collection, the embryos develop in the laboratory for 5 days and are frozen, and one is transferred to your womb on a second short visit. Preparation of the womb is monitored at our partner clinic in London, MotherScan.

Who can benefit from egg donation?

  • Low ovarian reserve or early menopause
  • Previous IVF with your own eggs that did not work
  • Egg quality affected by age
  • A genetic condition you do not want to pass on
  • Ovaries affected by surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy

Will my baby look like me?

Genetics
A baby conceived with donor eggs is genetically related to the donor and to your partner.
Pregnancy
You carry the pregnancy and give birth to your baby, and your body nourishes the baby throughout.
Choosing a donor
DNA Clinic matches the donor to you as a couple, by physical characteristics and by blood group. For treatment at Miracle Hospital, your UK team explains how the donor is chosen during your consultation.

Egg donation medication, in plain language

Oestrogen
Builds the lining of your womb so it is ready for the embryo. Its progress is checked at our partner clinic in London.
Progesterone
Supports the lining after embryo transfer.
Synchronisation
With a frozen embryo transfer your cycle does not need to match the donor’s, which is why short visits work.
What is included
The medication used in your treatment is included in the egg donation package price.

Risks and considerations

Multiple pregnancy
Transferring more than one embryo raises the chance of twins, which carries higher risks in pregnancy.
Pregnancy at an older age
Pregnancy later in life carries higher risks, so your health is checked before treatment starts.
The emotional side
Many people grieve the genetic link, and that is normal. Talking to a fertility counsellor before treatment can help.

Egg Donation: questions people ask

How long do I need to stay in Baku or Cyprus for egg donation?

Two short visits. Man 1 day and woman 1 day, at least 5 days apart. The man comes on the day the donor's eggs are collected; the woman comes for the frozen embryo transfer. A 5-day stay is possible, but short visits are what we recommend.

Does my partner need to travel?

Yes, for one day. The man comes to the clinic on the day the donor eggs are collected and gives a sperm sample the same day. The embryos then develop in the laboratory for 5 days and are frozen, so he does not need to stay.

Is a fresh embryo transfer possible?

In some cases. Either a 5-day stay, or two 1-day visits at least 5 days apart. The frozen transfer is the journey we recommend, because it lets both of you travel for one day each. Your doctor explains the difference during the consultation.

What does the egg donation package include?

The egg donation package costs £6,000. It includes medication used in treatment, accommodation at CityLife Boutique Hotel in Baku (not included in Cyprus) and transfers between the airport, the hotel and the clinic. Your first step is a free consultation with our UK team. Tests and follow-up scans in London are paid separately to our partner clinic, MotherScan, at its own prices.

How are egg donors screened?

Egg donors at DNA Clinic are screened with a chromosome analysis and tests for infections, including HIV and hepatitis B and C. For treatment at Miracle Hospital, your UK team explains its donor screening during your consultation.

Are egg donors anonymous?

Yes. Egg donors at DNA Clinic are anonymous. You can learn the donor's height, eye colour, hair colour and education; photographs and identity details are never shared. Instead of choosing from donor profiles, DNA Clinic matches the donor to you as a couple, by physical characteristics and by blood group. For treatment at Miracle Hospital, your UK team explains what the hospital shares about donors during your consultation.

Can we add genetic screening of the embryos?

Yes. Egg donation with NGS genetic screening is a separate package at £7,500, and it includes the medication used in treatment. NGS tests the embryos for chromosomal conditions before one is chosen for transfer.
