Genetic screening of embryos, added to IVF or donation treatment

PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis, now also called PGT) is genetic screening of embryos before transfer. A few cells are taken from each embryo on day 5 and tested, here with NGS (next generation sequencing), so that an embryo without the condition screened for can be chosen. It is added to IVF or donation treatment, not a separate journey.

What is PGD?

Embryos develop to day 5 in the laboratory, where a few cells are taken from each one and the embryos are frozen. Results take about 15 days, so a healthy embryo is transferred on a later visit rather than fresh. PGD is also the method used for gender selection, where the timing is different: cells are taken on day 3 and results are ready by day 5, in time for a fresh transfer.

How much does PGD genetic screening cost?

Screening is sold as part of a package: IVF with NGS costs £7,000, egg donation with NGS £7,500, and sperm donation with NGS £7,000. Each includes medication used in treatment and transfers between the airport, the hotel and the clinic.

Does PGD add extra days away?

It adds a visit rather than days. Screening for genetic conditions takes about 15 days after the cells are taken on day 5, so the embryos are frozen and the woman returns for a 1-day frozen embryo transfer once the results are back. For gender selection, results are ready by day 5, so the transfer can take place on the same visit plan as IVF.
